Klinefelter's syndrome (an extra X chromosome, karyotype 47,XXY) causes feminized body features and sterility in genetic males.

Klinefelter's syndrome results from non-disjunction of the sex chromosomes during gametogenesis, giving an individual with an extra X chromosome, so the karyotype becomes 47, XXY instead of the normal 46, XY. Because the individual has a Y chromosome, they develop as phenotypic males, but the extra X causes several distinguishing features:

  • Development of breast tissue in males (gynaecomastia) and other feminine body characteristics.
  • Tall stature with disproportionately long arms and legs.
  • Sparse facial and body hair.
