The copper-T is a copper-releasing IUD whose main contraceptive action is to prevent fertilization by acting on the sperm.

The Copper-T (Cu-IUD) is placed in the uterine cavity, where it steadily releases copper ions. These ions increase the phagocytosis of sperm within the uterus and suppress sperm motility and their fertilising capacity, so that very few (if any) sperm are able to reach and fertilise the egg.
