A longitudinal section of a typical ovule shows the funicle, integuments, micropyle, nucellus and the embedded embryo sac.

A typical anatropous angiosperm ovule, seen in longitudinal section (L.S.), shows the following parts:

  • Funicle: the stalk that attaches the ovule to the placenta.
  • Hilum: the point of attachment where the funicle meets the ovule body.
  • Integument(s): one or two protective outer layers surrounding the nucellus, which do not completely enclose it at one end.
  • Micropyle: a small pore left at the tip where the integuments do not fuse, serving as the passage for pollen-tube entry.
  • Chalaza: the basal part of the ovule where the integuments and nucellus are fused, opposite the micropyle.
  • Nucellus: the mass of tissue (megasporangium) enclosed by the integuments, within which the embryo sac develops; it provides nutrition to the developing embryo sac. …
