Photoelectric emission is frequency-gated electron ejection from a metal; its laws describe the threshold frequency, the intensity–current link, the frequency–KE link, and the instantaneous nature of the effect.

Photoelectric emission: When electromagnetic radiation (light, especially UV or visible for many metals, e.g. alkali metals) of sufficiently high frequency is incident on the clean surface of a metal, electrons are emitted from the surface. These ejected electrons are called photoelectrons, and the phenomenon is called the photoelectric effect/emission. It cannot be explained by the classical wave theory of light and was explained by Einstein using Planck's quantum (photon) hypothesis: each photon of frequency ν\nu carries energy hνh\nu, and an electron absorbs one photon's energy completely.

Laws of photoelectric effect (experimentally established):

  1. Threshold frequency: For a given metal, photoelectric emission occurs only when the frequency of incident light exceeds a certain minimum value called the threshold frequency ν0\nu_0, characteristic of that metal (related to its work function ϕ0=hν0\phi_0=h\nu_0).

  2. No emission below threshold: If the incident frequency is below ν0\nu_0, no photoelectrons are emitted at all, however great the intensity of the light and however long it is incident.

  3. Photocurrent proportional to intensity: For light of frequency above threshold, the saturation photoelectric current (i.e. the number of photoelectrons emitted per second) is directly proportional to the intensity of incident light, the frequency being kept constant.
