Photoelectric emission is electron ejection by light above a threshold frequency; the laws describe the intensity-current, frequency-threshold, and frequency-KE relationships, plus the instantaneous nature of the effect.

Photoelectric emission is the phenomenon in which electrons are emitted from the surface of a metal (or other material) when electromagnetic radiation (light) of sufficiently high frequency is incident upon it. The emitted electrons are called photoelectrons.

Laws of photoelectric effect:

  1. For light of a given frequency (above the threshold frequency), the photoelectric current (number of photoelectrons emitted per second) is directly proportional to the intensity of the incident light.
  2. For a given metal (photosensitive material), there exists a certain minimum frequency of incident light, called the threshold frequency ν0\nu_0, below which no photoelectric emission takes place, no matter how high the intensity of light is.
  3. Above the threshold frequency, the maximum kinetic energy of the emitted photoelectrons increases linearly with the frequency of incident light, and is completely independent of the intensity of light (KEmax=hν−ϕ0KE_{max}=h\nu-\phi_0). …
