Displacement current is the term Maxwell added to Ampere's law to account for a changing electric field (e.g. between charging capacitor plates), making the law consistent everywhere.

Ordinary conduction current IcI_c (actual flow of charge) does not exist in the gap between the plates of a charging capacitor, yet a magnetic field is still observed there — Maxwell resolved this by proposing a displacement current,

Id=ε0dΦEdtI_d = \varepsilon_0 \frac{d\Phi_E}{dt}

where ΦE\Phi_E is the electric flux through the surface. This term arises purely from a time-varying electric field and acts exactly like a real current in producing a magnetic field, even where no charge is physically flowing.

Maxwell modified Ampere's circuital law to include both currents, giving the Ampere-Maxwell law:

∮B⃗⋅dl⃗=μ0Ic+μ0ε0dΦEdt\oint \vec{B}\cdot d\vec{l} = \mu_0 I_c + \mu_0\varepsilon_0\frac{d\Phi_E}{dt} …
