Because the electric flux between the plates is directly proportional to the plate charge, its rate of change (the displacement current) always equals the rate of change of charge — i.e. the conduction current — even while the capacitor is discharging.

Consider a parallel plate capacitor of plate area A being discharged through a resistor, with instantaneous charge Q(t) on the plates. The conduction current in the connecting wire is

Ic=−dQdtI_c = -\frac{dQ}{dt} (charge decreasing as current flows out)

The electric field between the plates is E=Qε0AE = \frac{Q}{\varepsilon_0 A}, so the electric flux through a surface between the plates is

ΦE=E×A=Qε0\Phi_E = E \times A = \frac{Q}{\varepsilon_0}

The displacement current is defined as

Id=ε0dΦEdt=ε0×1ε0dQdt=dQdtI_d = \varepsilon_0 \frac{d\Phi_E}{dt} = \varepsilon_0 \times \frac{1}{\varepsilon_0}\frac{dQ}{dt} = \frac{dQ}{dt}
