What is on-demand service?
An on-demand service is one where the resource is supplied when the consumer asks for it, scaled to what the consumer asks for, and charged only for what is actually used — with no advance purchase or long procurement. The classic analogy is a utility: you do not build a power plant to light your home; you draw electricity from the grid whenever needed and pay per unit. In cloud computing the same idea applies to storage, servers (CPU/RAM), network and software: a user can demand 10 GB today, 1 TB next week, and nothing next month.
How cloud computing provides it
- On-demand self-service portals and APIs — the user logs into a web console (e.g. the AWS or Azure dashboard), selects the resource (a virtual machine, a database, extra storage) and gets it within minutes — without any human interaction with the provider's staff.
- Virtualization — the provider's physical servers are split by virtualization software into many virtual machines and virtual disks. Creating a "new server" for a customer is therefore just software allocation, which is why it can happen instantly.
- Resource pooling — thousands of customers share one enormous pool of hardware; whatever a user releases returns to the pool for someone else. Pooling is what makes serving any demand at any time economical. …
