Excessive or wrongly-postured laptop use harms the body (eyes, neck, back, wrists), disturbs sleep, and can harm mental and emotional well-being — so Sumit needs both ergonomic habits and screen-time discipline.

Health problems from computing devices fall into two groups — physical (caused by poor ergonomics and overuse) and psychological/emotional (caused by excessive engagement with the digital world). Sumit's father should cover both.

Physical health points

  1. Correct posture and ergonomics. Use the laptop at a desk, screen at eye level and about an arm's length away, back straight, feet flat on the floor. Using a laptop lying on the bed with a bent neck causes neck strain, backache and shoulder pain over time.
  2. Eye strain. Continuous staring at the screen causes dryness, irritation and blurred vision (Computer Vision Syndrome). Follow the 20-20-20 rule — every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Blink frequently, keep proper room lighting, avoid glare and adjust screen brightness. Never work in the dark.
  3. Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) / Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Hours of continuous typing or trackpad use strain the wrist and fingers. Keep wrists straight, take short breaks and stretch the hands.
  4. Regular breaks and physical activity. Get up, stretch and walk every 30–45 minutes. Balance laptop time with outdoor games and exercise — health first, screen second.
  5. Sleep hygiene. The blue light of screens suppresses melatonin and disturbs sleep. No laptop at least an hour before bedtime.
  6. Safe listening. Loud audio on earphones for long durations damages hearing — keep the volume moderate.
  7. Heat. A laptop kept directly on the lap for long periods exposes the body to heat; use it on a table.

Mental and emotional health points

  1. Internet addiction. Endless gaming, videos and social media reduce study time, concentration and real-world social contact. Fix daily time limits. …
