Practice each movement on your own body and notice which joint makes it possible:
- Flexion: decreasing the angle at a joint (e.g. bending the elbow) — a hinge-joint movement.
- Extension: increasing the angle back (e.g. straightening the elbow) — the hinge joint's opposite movement to flexion.
- Abduction: moving a limb away from the body's midline (e.g. raising your arm sideways) — needs the multiaxial freedom of a ball-and-socket joint like the shoulder.
- Adduction: moving a limb back towards the midline — the opposite of abduction, also at the shoulder or hip.
