Peer pressure is powerful during adolescence because peer approval and independence both matter intensely at this stage — but peer influence can be positive just as easily as negative.

This activity sits directly inside the chapter's discussion of adolescent psycho-social change. Section 9.3's description of Raman illustrates a typical adolescent: "he also values his relationships with his friends and has begun spending more time with them" while also "started valuing his freedom." The chapter's own staged account of adolescence explains why peer pressure is so hard to resist: in Early Adolescence (10-14), "a strong peer influence is also reflected through development of relationships among peer group/friends"; in Middle Adolescence (14-17), "importance of peer pressure and peer acceptance and approval increases," and individuals may try things they consider "undesirable" just to match behaviour with peer-group belonging — which is also exactly why this age group is "prone to engage in social problems including addiction to smoking, drug abuse." …
