Friction can be reduced by making surfaces smoother (polishing), adding a lubricant, converting sliding to rolling motion (wheels/bearings), or shaping an object to cut air resistance (streamlining).

The chapter lists four methods:

  1. Polishing: smoothing and rubbing a surface to reduce its unevenness. Example: shining a cricket ball increases the swing the bowler can generate, because the smoother, polished surface changes how air moves past it.
  2. Lubricating: applying a lubricant such as motor oil, grease, or wax between two surfaces. Example: bearings and gears in practical mechanical systems rely on lubricants to keep friction low.
  3. Wheels and ball-bearing use: converts sliding friction into rolling friction, which is easier to overcome, saving energy and time. Example: roller skates, where both the wheels and the internal ball-bearings reduce friction.
  4. Streamlining: giving an object a sharp, smooth shape to reduce air (fluid) friction. Example: a javelin, boats, ships, and vehicles are all shaped with a sharp point to cut air resistance. …
