Flat Foot (Pes Planus) is a postural deformity in which the medial longitudinal arch of the foot is absent or very low, so the whole sole touches the ground on standing; it is diagnosed by inspecting the arch or with the water print test, and corrected mainly through toe- and heel-walking drills, skipping, picking up marbles and writing in sand with the toes, along with the yoga asanas Adhomukhsavasana and Vajrasana and therapeutic massage.

What is Flat Foot?

In a normal foot, the inner edge rises off the ground in a curved arch that helps absorb shock and distribute body weight. In Flat Foot (Pes Planus), this arch is missing or very shallow, so the entire sole makes contact with the floor when the person stands. It can be checked simply by looking at the arch, or more formally with the water print test, in which a wet foot is pressed onto paper or a flat surface — a flat foot leaves an almost complete footprint with no gap along the inner edge.

Causes include genetic and environmental factors, injury, improper or unsupportive footwear, obesity, habitually carrying heavy weight, arthritis, tarsal coalition (fused foot bones), tight calf muscles, and being forced to walk at too early an age.

Corrective Measures for Flat Foot

  • Walking and standing on the toes and heels, and jumping in all four directions, to actively work the arch-supporting muscles.
  • Skipping rope, which repeatedly loads and strengthens the arch. …
