Recombinant human insulin, produced using genetically engineered bacteria, is marketed under the trade name Humulin.

Earlier, insulin used to treat diabetes was extracted from the pancreas of slaughtered cattle and pigs; this animal insulin, while chemically similar, differed slightly from human insulin and could cause allergic reactions in some patients.

In 1983, Eli Lilly (an American company) prepared two DNA sequences corresponding to the A and B chains of human insulin and introduced them into separate plasmids, which were used to produce the two insulin chains in Escherichia coli.
