Totipotency is the ability of a single (differentiated) plant cell to give rise to a whole new organism when provided suitable conditions.

The German botanist Gottlieb Haberlandt first proposed (1902) that plant cells possess an inherent capacity to regenerate a whole plant - a property he termed totipotency.
