Q.An energy-flow diagram traces a grazing food chain, with each organism drawn in a box numbered 1 to 4 and a "Heat" bubble showing energy lost at every step. Radiant energy from the Sun is captured by a green plant (box 1). Part of that energy is lost as heat and the rest passes to a leaf-eating caterpillar (box 2); the caterpillar is eaten by a small insectivorous bird (box 3); and that bird is in turn eaten by a large predatory bird such as a vulture/hawk (box 4). At every transfer some energy is dissipated as heat, and dead matter from each level is fed to a detritus-feeding decomposer drawn at the base. State which trophic level each of the boxes numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4 represents.

The diagram is a grazing food chain in which energy flows from the Sun to a green plant, then to a caterpillar, then to a small bird, then to a large predatory bird, with heat lost at each step. The four numbered boxes are the four trophic levels: 1 = producer, 2 = primary consumer (herbivore), 3 = secondary consumer (carnivore), 4 = tertiary consumer (top carnivore).

Concept: trophic levels

A trophic level is a step in a food chain defined by how an organism obtains its energy. Energy enters the ecosystem as sunlight, is fixed by producers, and then flows one way through successive consumers; at each transfer roughly 90% is lost as heat (the 10% law), which is why the diagram shows a "Heat" bubble at every step and why chains are short.

Assigning each box

  • Box 1 – the green plant. It traps solar energy and makes its own food by photosynthesis. It is the producer / autotroph, the first trophic level (T₁).
  • Box 2 – the caterpillar. It eats the plant, so it is a herbivore = primary consumer, the second trophic level (T₂).
  • Box 3 – the small insectivorous bird. It eats the caterpillar (a herbivore), making it a carnivore = secondary consumer, the third trophic level (T₃).
  • Box 4 – the large predatory bird. It eats the smaller bird (itself a carnivore), so it is a top carnivore = tertiary consumer, the fourth trophic level (T₄). …
