In cytokine-barrier immunity, virus-infected cells release interferons that protect neighbouring healthy cells from viral infection.

Concept. Innate immunity is non-specific defence present from birth, made of four types of barriers — physical, physiological, cellular and cytokine barriers. Cytokine barriers are the last of these.

Why they matter. When a virus enters and infects a body cell, that cell mounts a chemical alarm to limit the spread of the virus to neighbouring cells before the specific (acquired) immune response can build up.
