Parturition is the physiological process of delivering the mature foetus at the end of pregnancy, triggered mainly by the hormone oxytocin acting on the uterine muscles.

Parturition (childbirth) is the process by which a fully developed foetus is expelled from the mother's uterus at the end of the gestation period (about 9 months, or 280 days, in humans).

Mechanism (as taught in NCERT):

  1. Signals for parturition originate from both the fully developed foetus and the placenta, which triggers mild uterine contractions called the 'foetal ejection reflex'.
  2. This causes release of a small amount of oxytocin from the maternal pituitary.
  3. Oxytocin acts on the uterine (myometrial) muscle, stimulating stronger uterine contractions, which in turn stimulate further oxytocin release - a positive feedback loop that progressively increases the intensity of contractions. …
