Parturition (childbirth) is triggered by a positive-feedback hormonal loop, mainly involving oxytocin, that produces strong uterine contractions to expel the fetus.

Parturition, or childbirth, is the process of delivering the fully developed fetus at the end of the gestation period (about 9 months/40 weeks in humans). It is induced by a complex neuroendocrine mechanism: signals originating from the fully developed fetus and the placenta trigger mild uterine contractions, called the 'foetal ejection reflex' or Ferguson's reflex. This reflex triggers the release of the hormone oxytocin from the mother's posterior pituitary gland. Oxytocin acts on the uterine (myometrial) muscles, causing stronger contractions, which in turn stimulate further oxytocin release - a positive-feedback mechanism that causes contractions to become progressively more frequent and intense.
