Fertilisation is the fusion of a haploid sperm and a haploid secondary oocyte to form a diploid zygote; in humans this occurs internally in the ampullary-isthmic junction of the fallopian tube.

Fertilisation (syngamy) is the process of fusion of a male gamete (sperm) with a female gamete (secondary oocyte/ovum) to form a diploid zygote, restoring the normal (2n) chromosome number of the species.

Site: In humans, fertilisation is internal and occurs in the ampullary-isthmic junction of the fallopian tube (oviduct).

Process:

  1. During copulation, sperm are deposited in the vagina and swim up through the cervix, uterus, and into the fallopian tube.
  2. Of the millions of sperm ejaculated, only a few thousand reach the vicinity of the ovum; sperm undergo capacitation (physiological changes in the female tract that enable them to fertilise the egg).
  3. On meeting the secondary oocyte, one sperm penetrates the outer corona radiata and zona pellucida layers of the egg, aided by enzymes released from its acrosome (acrosomal reaction).
  4. This induces changes in the egg's membrane that block the entry of additional sperm (the fast electrical block and the slower cortical-granule/zona reaction), ensuring normally only one sperm fertilises one egg (preventing polyspermy). …
