Brief notes on gene therapy, ZIFT, the human ovary and Klinefelter's syndrome (write on any two).

  1. Gene therapy: It is a collection of methods that allows the correction of a genetic defect by introducing a normal/functional gene into the cells or tissues of a person to compensate for a non-functional (defective) gene. The first clinical use was for ADA (adenosine deaminase) deficiency, in which functional ADA genes (in lymphocytes/bone-marrow cells) were introduced into the patient. If introduced into germ/embryonic cells at an early stage, the correction could be permanent.
  2. ZIFT (Zygote Intra Fallopian Transfer): It is an assisted reproductive technology (ART). Ova and sperm are combined outside the body; the resulting zygote or early embryo (up to the 8-blastomere stage) is then transferred into the fallopian tube of the female, where it moves to the uterus and implants. It helps couples who cannot achieve fertilization/transport naturally. (When an embryo of more than 8 blastomeres is transferred into the uterus, it is called IUT.)
  3. Human ovary: The ovaries are a pair of primary female sex organs, each about 2-4 cm long, attached to the pelvic wall and uterus by ligaments. Each ovary produces the female gamete (ovum) and secretes the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone. Internally an ovary has an outer cortex (containing follicles at various stages) and an inner medulla. …
