  1. Functions of placenta: The placenta connects the developing foetus to the mother's uterine wall. It supplies oxygen and nutrients from the mother's blood to the foetus and removes carbon dioxide and nitrogenous wastes from the foetus to the mother, without the two bloodstreams mixing. It also acts as an endocrine gland, secreting hormones such as human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), human placental lactogen (hPL), estrogens and progesterone that maintain pregnancy.
  2. Menopause: Menopause is the stage in a woman's life, usually between about 45 and 50 years of age, when the menstrual (ovarian) cycles stop permanently and she can no longer bear children. It marks the end of the reproductive phase in females.
  3. Stem cells: Stem cells are unspecialised (undifferentiated) cells that have the ability to divide repeatedly and to differentiate into different types of specialised cells (such as blood, nerve or muscle cells).
