A nucleotide - the building block of DNA and RNA - is formed of three joined components: a nitrogenous base, a five-carbon (pentose) sugar, and a phosphate group.

Nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) are polymers built from repeating monomer units called nucleotides. Each nucleotide is composed of three parts:

  1. A nitrogenous base - either a purine (adenine, guanine) or a pyrimidine (cytosine, thymine in DNA; cytosine, uracil in RNA). The base is attached to the 1' carbon of the sugar.
  2. A pentose sugar - deoxyribose in DNA (lacking an -OH at the 2' carbon) or ribose in RNA.
  3. A phosphate group - attached to the 5' carbon of the sugar, which links one nucleotide to the next via a phosphodiester bond, forming the sugar-phosphate backbone of the nucleic acid strand. …
