Fertilization is biologically significant because it restores diploidy, initiates the new sporophyte (embryo), triggers seed/fruit formation, and (via double fertilization in angiosperms) also produces the nutritive endosperm, while generating genetic variation.

Fertilization is the fusion of a haploid male gamete (from the pollen tube) with a haploid female gamete (the egg cell) to form a diploid zygote. Its significance can be summarised as follows:

  1. Restoration of the diploid (2n) chromosome number: meiosis during gamete formation halves the chromosome number to haploid (n); fertilization fuses two haploid gametes back into a diploid zygote, restoring the species-specific chromosome number and maintaining genetic continuity across generations.
  2. Initiation of the new sporophytic generation: the diploid zygote is the first cell of the new sporophyte plant; it undergoes repeated mitotic divisions to develop into the mature embryo within the seed.
  3. Trigger for seed and fruit development: fertilization stimulates the ovule to develop into the seed and the ovary to develop into the fruit, which protects the seed and (in many species) aids in its dispersal. …
