At 160degC, excess concentrated H2SO4 dehydrates ethanol (removes a water molecule) to give ethene.

Ethanol undergoes acid-catalysed dehydration when heated with excess concentrated sulphuric acid. The reaction proceeds via protonation of the -OH group (making it a good leaving group, water), loss of water to form a carbocation intermediate, and then loss of a beta-hydrogen (E1 elimination) to form the C=C double bond:

CH3-CH2-OH --conc. H2SO4, 160degC--> CH2=CH2 (ethene) + H2O
