Heating phenol with concentrated H2SO4H_2SO_4 sulphonates the ring, giving hydroxybenzenesulphonic acid(s) — mainly the para isomer at higher temperature.

The −OH-OH group of phenol is a strong activating, ortho/para-directing group. When phenol is heated with concentrated sulphuric acid, an electrophilic aromatic substitution (sulphonation) occurs: the electrophile SO3H+SO_3H^+ (generated from H2SO4H_2SO_4) attacks the ring at the ortho and para positions relative to −OH-OH:

C6H5OH+H2SO4→Δo-/p-HO−C6H4−SO3H+H2OC_6H_5OH + H_2SO_4 \xrightarrow{\Delta} \text{o-} / \text{p-}HO-C_6H_4-SO_3H + H_2O
