The Bouveault-Blanc reduction uses sodium metal in ethanol to reduce a carbonyl group (classically an ester) to the corresponding alcohol, via a dissolving-metal (single-electron transfer) mechanism, before LiAlH4/NaBH4 became common.

Before complex metal hydrides like LiAlH4 were developed, esters (and other carbonyl compounds) were reduced using sodium metal dissolved in absolute ethanol — sodium donates electrons to the C=O group and ethanol supplies protons, converting >C=O ultimately to >CH-OH.
