Propyne + H2O (HgSO4/H2SO4) gives acetone by Markovnikov hydration.

When propyne (CH3-C(triple)CH) is treated with water in the presence of HgSO4 and dilute H2SO4 at about 60 C, water adds across the triple bond following Markovnikov's rule (OH goes to the more substituted carbon).

This first forms an unstable enol (CH3-C(OH)=CH2), which immediately tautomerises to the more stable keto form:

CH3-C(OH)=CH2 -> CH3-CO-CH3
