The carbylamine reaction is a test specific to primary amines: warming with chloroform and alcoholic KOH produces a foul-smelling isocyanide.

When a primary amine (aliphatic or aromatic) is heated with chloroform (CHCl3) and alcoholic potassium hydroxide (KOH), it is converted into an isocyanide (carbylamine), which has an extremely offensive, characteristic smell.

R-NH2 + CHCl3 + 3KOH -> R-NC + 3KCl + 3H2O

(Example: aniline gives phenyl isocyanide, C6H5NC.)

Mechanism: alcoholic KOH generates dichlorocarbene (:CCl2) from chloroform, which is attacked by the lone pair of the primary amine's nitrogen; subsequent loss of two HCl molecules gives the isocyanide.
