Addition polymers: monomers with C=C bonds add together with no by-product (e.g., polyethylene). Condensation polymers: bifunctional monomers link with loss of a small molecule like water at each step (e.g., Nylon-6,6).

Addition polymers (chain-growth polymers) are formed by the repeated addition of monomer molecules possessing double or triple bonds, without the elimination of any small molecule. The molecular formula of the polymer is simply an exact multiple of the monomer's formula.

Example: n(CH2=CH2) -> -(-CH2-CH2-)-n (polyethylene, from the monomer ethene)
