Hexamethylenediamine [H2N-(CH2)6-NH2] and adipic acid [HOOC-(CH2)4-COOH] are heated together under high pressure. The -NH2 groups of the diamine react with the -COOH groups of the diacid, eliminating water at each linkage (amide/peptide-type bond formation) to build up a long polyamide chain:
n H2N-(CH2)6-NH2 + n HOOC-(CH2)4-COOH --(heat, pressure)--> [-NH-(CH2)6-NH-CO-(CH2)4-CO-]n + 2n H2O
