Ionization isomers swap which ion sits inside the coordination sphere vs outside as the counter-ion; linkage isomers differ in which atom of an ambidentate ligand is bonded to the metal.

Ionization isomerism arises when two coordination compounds have the same overall molecular formula but produce different ions in solution, because a group that acts as a ligand in one isomer acts as the free counter-ion (outside the coordination sphere) in the other, and vice versa.

Example: [Co(NH3)5Br]SO4 (here Br- is a ligand and SO4^2- is the counter-ion; in solution it gives SO4^2- ions and a test for sulphate) and [Co(NH3)5SO4]Br (here SO4^2- is a ligand and Br- is the counter-ion; in solution it gives Br- ions and a test for bromide) - same formula, but chemically distinct compounds.
