Geometrical isomerism arises from different possible spatial arrangements (cis and trans) of ligands around a central metal atom in coordination compounds of certain geometries.

Geometrical isomerism is a type of stereoisomerism shown by coordination compounds in which ligands can be arranged in different relative positions around the central metal atom without breaking any metal-ligand bonds, giving rise to isomers with the same connectivity but different geometry - commonly classified as cis (identical ligands adjacent) and trans (identical ligands opposite).

It is shown mainly by square planar (coordination number 4) and octahedral (coordination number 6) complexes; it does NOT occur in tetrahedral complexes (all four positions are equivalent/adjacent).

Example with coordination number 4 (square planar): [Pt(NH3)2Cl2] (an MA2B2-type square planar complex).
