A galvanic (or voltaic) cell consists of two electrodes (half-cells) - one where oxidation occurs (the anode, negative terminal) and one where reduction occurs (the cathode, positive terminal) - connected externally by a wire and internally by a salt bridge (or porous partition) that completes the circuit and maintains electrical neutrality.
Because the overall redox reaction occurring in the cell is thermodynamically spontaneous (Delta G negative), electrons flow spontaneously from the anode to the cathode through the external circuit, generating an electric current - this is how chemical energy is converted into electrical energy.
