DDT is a chlorine-containing organic insecticide (a polyhalogen compound), historically important for controlling insect-borne diseases, but it is now restricted because it does not break down in the environment and accumulates in living tissue.

DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) was the first synthetic organic insecticide to be widely used. It was highly effective in killing mosquitoes (which spread malaria) and body lice (which spread typhus), and its use in the mid-20th century greatly reduced deaths from these insect-borne diseases, particularly during and after World War II.

However, DDT has serious drawbacks:

  • It is chemically very stable and non-biodegradable, so it persists in soil and water for a long time.
  • It is fat-soluble, so it accumulates in the fatty tissue of animals and undergoes biomagnification up the food chain (concentration increases at each trophic level, becoming highest in top predators, including humans). …
