The Van't Hoff factor (i) measures the extent of dissociation or association of a solute in solution, and for an associating solute it can be used to calculate the degree of association.

Van't Hoff introduced the factor i to account for solutes that dissociate into more particles (e.g. electrolytes) or associate into fewer particles (e.g. carboxylic acids dimerising in a non-polar solvent) than the simple formula suggests:

i = (observed colligative property) / (calculated colligative property assuming no dissociation/association)

= (normal/theoretical molar mass) / (observed/experimental molar mass)

= (actual number of particles after dissociation/association) / (number of formula units initially dissolved)

For dissociation, i > 1; for no change, i = 1; for association, i < 1.

Calculating the degree of association: suppose n solute molecules associate to form one aggregate (e.g. n = 2 for dimerisation, as with acetic acid or benzoic acid in benzene). If alpha is the degree of association (fraction of molecules that associate):
