Ionic solids = ions held by electrostatic forces (NaCl); covalent solids = atoms held by a covalent network (diamond).

Ionic solids consist of positive and negative ions arranged in a regular lattice and held together by strong electrostatic (coulombic) forces. They are hard and brittle, have high melting points, and conduct electricity only when molten or dissolved. Example: sodium chloride, NaCl.
