Transition elements readily form complex compounds because their ions are small and highly charged, and they have empty d-orbitals of suitable energy available to accept ligand lone pairs.

Most transition metal ions form complexes (coordination compounds) with ligands far more readily than main-group metal ions, for these reasons:

  1. Small ionic size and high nuclear charge: transition metal ions are comparatively small with a high charge/radius ratio (high charge density), so they attract electron-rich ligands (Lewis bases) strongly.

  2. Availability of vacant d-orbitals: transition metals have empty or partially filled (n-1)d and ns/np orbitals of comparable, suitably low energy, which can accept lone pairs of electrons donated by ligands to form coordinate (dative) covalent bonds - this is the essential requirement for complex formation.
