Colour in transition metal ions arises from d-d electronic transitions made possible by incomplete d-subshells and ligand-induced splitting of d-orbital energies.

Most transition metal ions have a partially filled d-subshell (i.e., neither completely empty d0d^0 nor completely full d10d^{10}). When such an ion is surrounded by ligands (water molecules, or other groups) in aqueous solution or in a complex, the electrostatic field of the ligands is not spherically symmetric around the metal — it causes the five originally degenerate d-orbitals to split into two (or more) sets of different energies, e.g., in an octahedral field, into a lower-energy t2gt_{2g} set and a higher-energy ege_g set, separated by the crystal field splitting energy Δo\Delta_o.
