Averaging I² over one full cycle and taking the square root gives I_rms = I_0/√2.

The instantaneous AC current is I = I_0 sin ωt, where I_0 is the peak (amplitude) value and T = 2π/ω is the period.

By definition, the RMS (root-mean-square) value is the square root of the average (mean) of I² taken over one complete cycle:

I_rms = √[ (1/T) ∫₀^T I² dt ]

First compute the mean of I²:

(1/T) ∫₀^T I_0² sin²ωt dt

Using the identity sin²ωt = (1 − cos 2ωt)/2:

= (I_0²/T) ∫₀^T [(1 − cos 2ωt)/2] dt

= (I_0²/2T) [ ∫₀^T dt − ∫₀^T cos 2ωt dt ]

The second integral, ∫₀^T cos 2ωt dt, is the integral of a cosine over exactly two full cycles (since 2ω corresponds to period T/2), and it evaluates to zero (equal positive and negative areas cancel). The first integral is simply T. So:
