Gauss' theorem gives E = lambda/(2 pi epsilon0 r) for an infinite line charge.

Gauss' theorem: The total electric flux through any closed surface is 1ε0\frac{1}{\varepsilon_0} times the net charge enclosed by that surface:

∮E⃗⋅dA⃗=qencε0.\oint \vec{E}\cdot d\vec{A} = \frac{q_{enc}}{\varepsilon_0}.

Field due to an infinite straight uniformly charged wire (linear charge density lambda): By symmetry the field is radial and has the same magnitude at all points equidistant from the wire. Choose a coaxial cylindrical Gaussian surface of radius r and length l around the wire.

  • Flux through the two flat ends is zero (E is parallel to the ends).
  • Flux through the curved surface is E×(2πrl)E \times (2\pi r l).

Charge enclosed is qenc=λlq_{enc} = \lambda l. By Gauss' theorem, …
