Lenz's law states that the induced current always flows in a direction that opposes the very change in flux that produced it; this makes it a consequence of energy conservation.

Lenz's Law: The direction of an induced e.m.f. (and hence induced current, in a closed circuit) is always such that it opposes the change in magnetic flux that causes it.

If the flux through a coil is increasing, the induced current flows in a direction that sets up a magnetic field opposing this increase (i.e., opposing the cause). If the flux is decreasing, the induced current flows so as to try to maintain (support) the flux, again opposing the change. This is expressed by the negative sign in Faraday's law:

ε=−dΦBdt\varepsilon = -\frac{d\Phi_B}{dt}
