Faraday's two laws of electromagnetic induction state that a changing flux induces an emf, and that the induced emf equals the negative rate of change of magnetic flux.

Faraday's First Law: Whenever the magnetic flux linked with a closed circuit changes, an emf is induced in the circuit. This induced emf lasts only as long as the flux is changing (this is the phenomenon of electromagnetic induction).

Faraday's Second Law: The magnitude of the induced emf is directly proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux linked with the circuit:

ε=−NdϕBdt\varepsilon = -N\dfrac{d\phi_B}{dt}
