Modulation impresses a low-frequency message on a high-frequency carrier. AM varies the carrier amplitude, FM varies its frequency; FM is more noise-resistant and higher fidelity. (Communication Systems - dropped from the current rationalised syllabus.)

What is modulation (1 mark):

Modulation is the process of changing (varying) some characteristic - amplitude, frequency or phase - of a high-frequency carrier wave in accordance with the instantaneous value of a low-frequency message (information/audio) signal. It is needed because low-frequency signals cannot be radiated efficiently over long distances; combining them with a high-frequency carrier makes long-range transmission with a practical antenna possible.

Amplitude modulation (AM) (part of 4 marks):

In AM the amplitude of the carrier wave is varied in proportion to the instantaneous amplitude of the message signal, while the carrier's frequency and phase remain unchanged. The envelope of the modulated wave has the shape of the message signal. AM is simple and cheap but is more affected by noise (because noise chiefly changes amplitude) and has lower sound quality.

Frequency modulation (FM) (part of 4 marks): …
