The Biot-Savart law gives the magnetic field contribution of a small current-carrying element at a point in space, analogous to Coulomb's law for electric fields.

Statement: The magnetic field dB⃗d\vec{B} at a point P due to a small current element I dl⃗I\,d\vec{l} is:

  • directly proportional to the current II and the length of the element dldl,
  • directly proportional to the sine of the angle θ\theta between the current element and the line joining the element to point P,
  • inversely proportional to the square of the distance rr from the element to point P,
  • and directed perpendicular to the plane containing dl⃗d\vec{l} and r⃗\vec{r} (given by the right-hand rule).

Mathematically:

dB⃗=μ04πI dl⃗×r^r2d\vec{B} = \frac{\mu_0}{4\pi}\frac{I\,d\vec{l}\times\hat{r}}{r^2}

or in magnitude form:

dB=μ04πI dlsin⁡θr2dB = \frac{\mu_0}{4\pi}\frac{I\,dl\sin\theta}{r^2}

where μ0/4π\mu_0/4\pi (=10−7 T m/A=10^{-7}\ \text{T m/A}) is the constant of proportionality, μ0\mu_0 being the permeability of free space.
