A charge moving through combined electric and magnetic fields experiences the Lorentz force F⃗=qE⃗+qv⃗×B⃗\vec{F} = q\vec{E} + q\vec{v}\times\vec{B}.

A charge qq moving with velocity v⃗\vec{v} in a region with electric field E⃗\vec{E} and magnetic field B⃗\vec{B} experiences two forces simultaneously:

  • Electric force: F⃗E=qE⃗\vec{F}_E = q\vec{E} (along E⃗\vec{E}, independent of motion).
  • Magnetic force: F⃗B=q(v⃗×B⃗)\vec{F}_B = q(\vec{v}\times\vec{B}) (perpendicular to both v⃗\vec{v} and B⃗\vec{B}, exists only if the charge is moving).

The total force, called the Lorentz force, is their vector sum:

F⃗=qE⃗+q(v⃗×B⃗)\vec{F} = q\vec{E} + q(\vec{v}\times\vec{B})
