Lorentz force is the combined electric and magnetic force on a moving charge: F⃗=q(E⃗+v⃗×B⃗)\vec{F} = q(\vec{E} + \vec{v}\times\vec{B}).

When a particle carrying charge qq moves with velocity v⃗\vec{v} in a region where both an electric field E⃗\vec{E} and a magnetic field B⃗\vec{B} are present, it experiences two forces:

Electric force: F⃗E=qE⃗\vec{F}_E = q\vec{E} — acts along the field, independent of the charge's motion.

Magnetic force: F⃗B=q(v⃗×B⃗)\vec{F}_B = q(\vec{v}\times\vec{B}) — its magnitude is qvBsin⁡θqvB\sin\theta (where θ\theta is the angle between v⃗\vec{v} and B⃗\vec{B}) and it acts perpendicular to both v⃗\vec{v} and B⃗\vec{B}; it does no work on the charge.
