The 'missing' mass when nucleons bind into a nucleus (mass defect) is converted to the binding energy that holds the nucleus together, via E=mc2E=mc^2.

Mass defect (Δm\Delta m): When ZZ protons and NN neutrons combine to form a nucleus, the mass of the resulting nucleus is found to be less than the sum of the masses of the free (separated) protons and neutrons. This difference is called the mass defect:

Δm=[Zmp+Nmn]−Mnucleus\Delta m = \left[Zm_p + Nm_n\right] - M_{nucleus}

where mpm_p, mnm_n are the masses of a free proton and neutron, and MnucleusM_{nucleus} is the actual mass of the nucleus.
