Beta particles are fast electrons/positrons from the nucleus: charged, light, more penetrating and less ionising than alpha, with a continuous energy spectrum.

Three important properties of beta particles:

  1. Nature and charge — A beta particle is a high-speed electron (β−\beta^-, charge −e-e) or a positron (β+\beta^+, charge +e+e) ejected from the nucleus when a neutron converts to a proton (or vice versa). Its mass is that of an electron, negligible next to a nucleon.

  2. Penetrating and ionising power — Because they are light and fast, beta particles penetrate matter much more than alpha particles (they can pass through a few mm of aluminium) but ionise the medium far less than alpha particles.
