Isotopes = same atomic number, different mass number (e.g. C-12, C-14); isobars = same mass number, different atomic number (e.g. Ar-40, Ca-40).

Isotopes: Atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons (same atomic number Z) but different numbers of neutrons, and hence different mass numbers A. They occupy the same place in the periodic table and have identical chemical properties.

Example: hydrogen has isotopes 1H^1 (protium), 1H^2 (deuterium), 1H^3 (tritium); or carbon 6C^12 and 6C^14.
